A previous blog post outlined their successes from year one. Through small group instruction, their class of seven learned hard and soft skills to help them gain independence and contribute to their community. The curriculum covered everything from Career Development and Money Management to Health and Wellness. During the second half of the course, they focused on workplace dynamics, communication and learned how to direct the ebb and flow of a conversation. Since this part of the course went over workplace skills, Joe was able to share a “Hire Me!” presentation that he uses in our eVero Outreach sessions! His presentation was aimed at helping individuals to enter the workforce by giving them an overview of the interview process, what to expect, and how to respond to common interview questions. Along with insight into how to prepare, what to wear, transportation, and what they can anticipate on the day of the interview. RIGHT: Joe M. presents the "Hire Me!" presentation at Nassau BOCES Patrick found that the communications lessons helped him to get a better understanding of the different ways to communicate, and helped him focus his conversational skills by being mindful of three key points: 1) What do we know? 2) What do we want to know? 3) What did we learn? He also is now able to identify how questions can quickly become too personal and how to refrain from pressuring people to share and do things they may not want to. Hands-on activities helped them to better understand the dynamics of a conversation. While standing at a pool table one person could ask a question and roll a ball to another to signify their turn to talk or respond. They learned while a conversation itself may have some structure, topics could change without warning and they needed to be prepared to adjust their train of thought and to be confident in trusting their instincts. Patrick mentioned the skills he has learned have had a direct impact on him since he began living on his own in 2022. Specifically cooking, laundry, and money management have been able to contribute to a more independent lifestyle. They also have both become more comfortable with money management, the efficiencies of mobile banking and even investing as they begin to start saving for retirement. Joe and Patrick were proud to be part of the inaugural class and they look forward to expanding their skillsets independently. Joe is excited to explore public transportation in New York by becoming more familiar with trains, the bus, and subways. The goal of this program is to prepare enrollees for a more inclusive, independent, and successful adult life utilizing NSSA’s Lifelong Learning Curriculum. Over a two-year period, the curriculum focuses on Career Development, Money Management, Nutrition, Shopping and Purchasing, Cooking, Health and Wellness, Safety, Transportation, Relationships, Conflict Resolution, Leisure and Exercise, Technology, Independent Living, and participation in the community. Through structured, small group instruction, attention is focused on skill acquisition and personal development with ongoing assessment of mastery and continued need. The 2-year program was created by NSSA, and is held in partnership with the Bellmore-Merrick School District under the leadership of Program Director, Jason K. Watson BCaBA, CBAA-NY. We sat down with Joe and Patrick for a brief question and answer session to learn about their experiences to date:   How did you learn about the NSSA Self-Direction Transition Program? Joe Malebranche (JM): I learned about it through the Bellmore Merrick Central High School District coordinator, who reached out to me and told me that there having an NSSA program and it's going to be run at the Brookside building for two years. Once I said I was interested, they did a virtual meeting with the Director, myself and my father, to learn more about the program. Patrick Clare (PC): I learned about it through my parents, at the time I was living at my parents’ house and they informed me about it and I thought it would be a good learning experience. I have gotten to meet a bunch more people in the program and have also learned about different things.   Is there a schedule for the topics that you will learn over the two years or do you find out the new subjects on a class by class basis or week by week? JM: They do provide us with a Power Point for each topic that we go over. We’ve gone over COVID Safety, CPR, Mental Health and Cooking. We go over each topic one by one, and they introduce them individually.   What were you most interested to learn about, and was there anything that surprised you? JM: For me it was Money Management and Budgeting, because it will help me manage my money and keep track of it, and how much I spend throughout the weeks. PC: I think that has to be Money Management but I also like Relationships and Friendships. Also, I recently moved out of my parents’ house and one of the things that has helped me is that I’ve learned cooking. Our annual spring celebration was filled with fun and some healthy competition. Over the last couple of weeks, we had four teams working together to create their own spring-themed Peep dioramas, and with an overarching beach theme, you will definitely feel like spring has sprung here in our office! All of the submissions were crafted using Peeps, snack foods, and office supplies, and after a surprise visit from the Easter bunny, our panel of judges took some time to determine a winner. The panel used five categories to grade each entry - concept, creativity, craftsmanship, complexity, and overall appearance. Surprisingly enough our winners (the blue team) were the only ones who decided to not go with the beach theme and their Mario Kart-inspired Rainbow Road diorama drove them to first place. The COVID-19 pandemic brought on a new level of financial unpredictability to healthcare-focused organizations, and it has taken a while for many to get back on track. Through it all, one theme has resonated loud and clear: it’s more important than ever to pay close attention to the financial strength of your organization. In the I/DD world, the current month’s billing used to be considered a good indicator of an agency’s success. But it’s become clear that while medical billing is very important, it’s not an accurate indicator of overall financial health. Managing and analyzing the entire revenue cycle, not just the billing components, is the key to measuring an organization’s financial success. What is I/DD Medical Billing?  The medical billing process involves submitting claims for services delivered to Individuals, and following up on claims with the health insurance companies, managed care organizations, and government programs like Medicaid.  Detailed support data is required to be submitted with each claim, and claims can be rejected for a variety of reasons related to incorrect or erroneous data. Gathering the required data, and submitting/resubmitting claims is a time-consuming process, and it’s not uncommon for it to take 2 or 3 months for some claims to be paid. Defining the Revenue Cycle We have seen the revenue cycle described as the financial circulatory system of an organization. In healthcare, this would include both the clinical and administrative functions necessary to continually bill, collect and manage payments. Revenue Cycle Management includes the medical billing process mentioned above, but it goes way beyond invoicing and payments. It includes everything from determining patient eligibility, documenting how and when services are delivered, to coding, submitting, and managing claims and payments. The Revenue Cycle Management process should analyze, validate, and track all claims, and quickly identify errors to limit denials.  An optimized Revenue Cycle Management process should automate manual tasks, which in turn should reduce the amount of time between service delivery and payment receipt, and should provide detailed reports and analytics around payments and accounts receivables, to give the organization full revenue transparency. Key components of Revenue Cycle Management include:  Service Delivery verification – ensure details regarding any encounters, including what service was delivered, where, when, for how long, are accurate and in accordance with applicable requirements. Eligibility verification– verify that health insurance or Medicaid coverage is active for the person receiving services before the claim is submitted. Medical coding validation – make sure that the correct and appropriate service codes have been assigned to the services delivered, and that the claim follows Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) standards. Claim Creation – Error-free claims for the services rendered are created in the proper format. Claim Submission – Secure electronic transmission of claims to the paying party (insurance, Medicaid, etc.). Denied Claims Management - tracking reason codes on denied claims to identify data collection or process flaws that need to be addressed cut down on future denials. Remittance Processing - Analysis and posting of payments received. As part of the 21st Century Cures Act, agencies providing personal care and home health services are required to have what’s called an Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) solution in place. Failure to do so will lead to denial of Medicaid claims. But why? The answer’s simple. It’s to reduce fraud and abuse. It’s to make sure the individuals and organizations are actually providing the in-home services for which they’ve billed. For better understanding, let’s take a closer look at EVV.   EVV: What Is It? Before diving into the nuts and bolts of EVV, we should address the obvious first question: What is EVV? EVV is a flexible data capture method that uses technology to collect and verify key information about personal & health care services at the point of care. The primary purpose of EVV is to ensure that care recipients are getting the services they need. It’s also to ensure that Medicaid is being billed accurately and appropriately for said services. And how’s that done? It's simple, really. The 21st Century Cares Act provides a set of requirements that all EVV systems must meet. Regarding visits conducted as part of personal care services or home health care services, the system’s technology must be able to verify: the type of service performed the individual receiving the service the date of the service the location of service delivery the individual providing the service the start and end times of the service The system may have options of different methods to capture/verify this information. These methods depend on the technology available to the field staff at the location the care is to be provided. Now, all these data collection requirements may raise an eyebrow and be a cause for some concerns. You may be worried about maintaining the privacy of the field staff and the person receiving care. You might be asking: “Does EVV track your location at all times?” Perhaps you’re worried that all these requirements may take away from the quality of the care provided. You might also be concerned that these requirements could require that the care recipient be stuck at home to receive their care— Limiting their ability to engage and participate in the community. Listen, these are all valid concerns. After all, it’s the person receiving care that should be the centerpiece of all this, right? Of course! And that’s where the good news comes in. You see, as we mentioned earlier, the primary purpose of EVV is to mitigate fraud and abuse.
